Centenary of the First Dáil

In May 1919 the First Dáil held a rare public sitting to welcome a delegation of three Irish-Americans. The delegation were representatives of the Irish Race Convention and had travelled to Europe to lobby American officials at the Paris Peace Conference. On 9 May, they addressed Dáil Éireann before returning to Paris.

Ireland: a parliamentary democracy

Ireland is a parliamentary democracy. The National Parliament (Oireachtas) consists of the President and two Houses: Dáil Éireann (House of Representatives) and Seanad Éireann (the Senate) whose functions and powers derive from the Constitution of Ireland enacted by the people on 1 July 1937. The Houses of the Oireachtas are situated at Leinster House, Dublin.

This year we celebrate Dáil100, the centenary of the First Dáil, which held its first public meeting on 21 January 1919.

Did you know?

The first female Tánaiste was Mary Harney, appointed in 1997. There has yet to be a female Taoiseach.

I believe participation is a means to an end. There is bad decision-making where there is not a gender balance among the decision-makers.
