In a rare exception from their usual hyper-obscure archive finds, Best Record have opted this time to give a proper reissue to a diggers favourite which enjoyed a second turn in the spotlight via a Dimitri From Paris compilation on BBE. Radiance and Andrea Stone's "You're My Number 1" is everything a boogie jam should be, from the liquid funk of the bassline to the snap of the drums - we defy anyone to stay off the floor when this pearl drops. It's no surprise to know it was mixed by the legendary M&M Productions team, featuring disco mix champion John Morales. The original is ace, but the extended dub mix on the flip is the one that will have the heads freaking out.

More from Studio Mule's must-check "Midnight In Tokyo" series, which gathers together obscure gems from the Japan that "sound best listened to at night". While the previous volume largely focused on forgotten Japanese jazz-funk, this edition is more eclectic in tone, variously touching on rare groove, new wave, soul and disco. It's another belting selection, all told, with highlights including the breathy sleaziness of Yoko Hatanaka's "More Sexy", the post-punk boogie eccentricity of Mari Kaneko's "Get To Paradise", the sprightly synth-funk of "Sunshine Bright On Me" by Kangaroo and the synth-rock silliness of The Fad's wonderfully over-the-top "Singing Lady".

Toro Y Moi - Outer Peace
CD
$12.96
FUNK! DISCO! FORMERLY CHILLWAVE? Super smooth, gliding vibes here from Toro y Moi that's cooler than Jamiroquai/Pharrell Williams with the hat on. Outer Peace presents a forgotten number of LPs the South Carolina-raised artists has released to date, though this presents his sixth in a decade. Without a hint of irony this album is superfresh, perhaps not as out there as SOPHIE's recent Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides - but it needn't be. Its temperament is mellow and easy going with a warm funky vibe: think Daft Punk post 2016 and you're almost there. Candescent pop, splashes of Parisian house and disco with fresh cosmopolitan touch added on top too. Pure Wax.

Substance - Rise & Shine
12"
$10.80
2018 marked the 30th anniversary of Berlin scene legend Peter Kuschnereit's (aka Substance or DJ Pete) DJ career, as well as his inaugural full release titled Rise And Shy on Ostgut Ton (the label released 2 of his tracks on compilations previously), making this the first Substance EP since 1998. Kuschnereit hits the ground running with title track "Rise And Shine", a gentle, sunrise-ready fusion of sparse, echo-laden percussion hits, poignant chords and glacial IDM melodies, before jauntily heading towards the dancefloor on the richly percussive, metallic and ghostly electro/techno fusion of "Countdown". His love of buzzing, faintly foreboding and strangely exotic ambience comes to the fore on "Bird Cave", while distance sees him successfully dubbing out similar-sounding electronic motifs fusing his deep, industrial aesthetic as Substance with the resonant bass-heavy leanings of DJ Pete over a clicking, hypnotic rhythm track.

Contours - North West EP
12"
$10.80
Given that Tom "Contours" Burford has spent much of the last year making collaborative cuts for Banana Hill that draw on tropical rhythms and native African musicianship, it's probably unsurprising that his return to Shall Not Fade should also feature some of the same influences. It's nominally a deep house EP, but the set's three original tracks are much more nuanced and open-minded than that. Check, for example, the layered hand percussion and polyrhythmic instrumentation on the jazz-funk influenced deep house brilliance of "Lisbon" and the tropical-tinged, intergalactic sci-fi house of "5th Planet". The B-side boasts two versions of "North West": the lilting horns, music box melodies and soft-touch percussion of Burford's original, and the Herbie Hancock inspired bruk-up business of Kaidi Tatham's superb revision.

Various - Alternative Funk: Volume 2
LP
$20.53
The Alternative Funk series was a hidden weapon for obsessive collectors of 80s obscurities across the spectrum of new wave, minimal wave and other such cult movements in this most creative of eras. With Platform 23 having just dropped the first volume of reissued material from this deep cover collection, they're right back on the case with another 15 oddball gems for your delectation. Dee Nasty's "Orientic Groove" is as exotic and funky as it sounds, while 3M create a kind of nightmarish collage of noise, found sound, percussive lurch and a positively unhinged brass section. That gives you just some idea of the scope you can expect to enjoy on this welcome reissue.

Jvxta - Rudy's Disc 31 (The Remixes) (Cinthie, Black Loops, k2k mixes)
12"
$8.64
London producer JVXTA made quite a splash with the Rudy's Disc 31 12" last year, fitting right in on the emergent Homage label out of New York. Now the label have done the right thing and commissioned a raft of remixes to present some fresh angles on those righteous house heaters. Cinthie comes correct with two loud and proud takes on "Brawn" that keep the powerful vocals front and centre while dropping two very different kinds of peak time house fireworks to propel them. Black Loops gets busy with "Rudy's Disc 31," twisting it up into a wriggling, bugging groove that celebrates the funky roots of the track while keeping it bumping in all the right places. K2k takes things deeper on their version of "State Of Nature," weaving an emotive, dubby tapestry of synths around the original vocal.

Dirty Channels - Take It Easy 001
12"
$8.64
Dirty Channels have a sturdy catalogue of lively party jams behind them now for Athens Of The North, Crosstown Rebels and Ovum Recordings to name but a few. Now they inaugurate the Take It Easy label with a killer EP of bright and bold disco edit house tracks. "Born In Douala" marches out of the block with a heavy dose of vintage funk guiding its every move. "Those Days" gets even more heated with its strict house rhythm section and joyous sample sources, before "The Lord" finishes the EP off in a dreamy, filter-sweeping reverie that looks ahead to the summer months with glee.
